The location where WUG Budapest will take place is one of the city’s most rapidly growing areas in the southern part of Budapest and is still easily accessible from the city center by any means of transportation. It’s also next to the National Theater, the Palace of Arts and the Budapest Park.
You’ll find the Great Market Hall in the area, which opened in 1932. It was the biggest hall in Europe built without any columns and has the first paternoster (a non-stop moving elevator in which you have to step in and out). The market hall is next to the Danube and will be completely renovated so its original beauty can shine. It also will also feature as a competition venue for the parkour and warm up activities.
The surrounding area will be used as a landmark for future urban sport games. Some of the elements will stay afterwards and we will also maintain the park left behind. It’s going to be used for Hungary’s biggest university, which will expand into the area with a new dormitory complex. We’re talking around 12 000 students who can find a chill spot to study for their exams, or to relax in between classes. Other sport facilities, such as the National Athletics Centre, the Rowing Centre and an extreme park, are going to be developed in the area as well.
