The World Urban Games Budapest 2019 is set to debut 90 days from now as the ultimate global showcase of a new generation of urban sport in the heart of the city, bringing a real festival atmosphere to Budapest in mid-September.
The World Urban Games Budapest 2019 is set to take place from 13-15 September and will be hosted a location called The Great Market Hall area, in the south of Budapest, just fifteen minutes from the city centre. The venue – a site built in the 1930s with a market hall in the centre - is currently is a restricted area, not open for the public. Once used as a store food for markets in Budapest, the Great Market Hall within the area now stands abandoned and crumbled. However, the whole Great Market Hall area is being regenerated specifically for the World Urban Games, resulting in a more attractive, greener and comfortable place not only for the athletes and fans but also for the citizens of the city after the event.
The Local Organising Committee (LOC) highlighted the fact that the preparations are progressing according to schedule in all respects and the masterplan will shortly be finalised as discussions are currently underway with the international sport federations.
The World Urban Games Budapest 2019 will bring together the biggest stars of the next generation of sport. On the program, 3X3 basketball, BMX freestyle, breaking, roller freestyle, parkour and flying disc will take centre stage as competition events while laser run and indoor rowing will also feature as showcase events.
Organisers are also ensuring that non-professional athletes and local residents have the opportunity to take part with a number of demonstration events, with varying levels of difficulty for all ages and abilities.
The LOC expects particular attention from the International Olympic Committee and organisers of future Olympic Games: in the case of 3x3 basketball and BMX freestyle, the competition in Budapest may serve as a test for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo, whilst breaking is set to debut at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris.
Organisers reiterated that the mission of the World Urban Games isn’t merely to create a sporting event, but to take urban sports to a new dimension and inspire the world, as well as creating a complete festival of urban culture, music and sport.
GAISF President Raffaele Chiulli said:
“It is wonderful to see the development of The Great Market Hall and the positive legacy that the World Urban Games Budapest 2019 will leave behind. These Games are not just for the stars of today, but for the future generations of Hungarian urban sports.”
LOC Chairman Balázs Fürjes added:
“Our beautiful city, Budapest has proved several times that it can host major international sports events at the highest standards, with a buzzing atmosphere. I am convinced that athletes, fans and all our guests will enjoy every moment of the very first edition of the World Urban Games."
